lmost a year later after Sony announced the first 1-inch sensor camera in the shell of a point and shoot, it was time to upgrade by adding some key communication capabilities like Wi-Fi and NFC and a tilting LCD screen – Digital Magnet reveals Sony RX100 mark ii.

The 1-inch Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor is 4x bigger than those we find in common pocket cameras

Both this one and its predecessor may be described as a pocket DSLR alternative. The 1-inch Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor inside delivers 20 million effective megapixels. It is 4 times bigger than those we find in common pocket cameras. This means more light is allowed and used for the picture. The back-illuminated sensor results in better low-light performance and noise-free high ISO images. Autoocusing speeds has also been increased.

While the hardware set has been significantly enhanced for better performance, the lens remains the same.

The vario 28-100mm lens has an aperture range from f/1.8 to 4.9

That is a vario lens from 28-100mm with an aperture range from f/1.8 to 4.9. The lens is the other serious contributor to the great low-light images this camera captures. A handy mechanism on the lens is the “step zoom” one. This means you can fast and easy switch from one focal length to the other thanks to the fixed positions on the lens control ring. The Carl Zeiss lens provides 3.6x optical zoom.

Thanks to the new sensor on board, video capturing has also improved its quality. The Sony RX100 ii records 1080p video at 24 or 25 frames per second.

The new camera has also gained Wi-Fi and NFC capabilities which will make transferring and sharing the images you have just captured much easier.

The new camera has gained Wi-Fi and NFC capabilities

For example now you will be able to control your intelligent camera with your smartphone and also add a multi-interface hotshoe. In addition Sony has also added a Multi-Terminal socket for attaching a wired remote control or an electronic view-finder. The 3-inch LCD display is tiltable to ensure maximum freedom during capturing more creative compositions.

Actually it’s not size neither megapixels that matter as much as the sensor and its size inside the camera.

The 1’’ sensor here comes close to DSLR sensors in terms of size

The 1’’ sensor here comes close to DSLR sensors in terms of size which turns this one into a very desirable pocket DSLR substitute for professional photographers. Something they can take out of their pocket and use to shoot a RAW image which they can then take home and further process.

The thing that might possibly change your mind about getting this camera is its price of around $750. But if you are fed up with your pocket camera taking blunt photos such set of specifications will be well appreciated despite the price.
